About Our Hides

Our collection of cowhide rugs have been hand selected from some of the finest tanneries in South America.  As a bi-product of the meat industry, our beautiful hides are tanned and preserved with the hair on, to show off their unique and individual colourings and markings.  It goes without saying, that each piece is a one of a kind to you and your home.

As with all hides and skins, you should be prepared to see hides that have some fire branding marks, scarring or insect bite marks.  Some hides may have minor imperfections which can include some small patched repairs or stitching and these should not be viewed as a defect or fault. Prices vary depending on size and markings.

All of our hides are chromium tanned, which does not only provide a highly durable rug with no unpleasant smells and odours, but it also ensures a supple finish.  This supple finish makes these hides a popular choice for those looking to use the hide for upholstery of furniture, including footstools and other items.

Care

For general cleaning and care, use a soft bristle brush on your vacuum cleaner hose and brush lightly in the direction of the hair.  Try to ensure that you do not go against the grain and push the hair upwards.

On a dry day, take your hide outside and give it a gentle shake to allow fresh air into the hide and hair.  This gives your hide the chance to breath, reducing odours and small particles which might have collected in the hair.

If you spill something on your hide, use a damp cloth and a little mild soapy water to wipe the hide in the direction of the hair grain.  Try not to soak the hide and get it too wet. After the stain has been removed, use a clean damp cloth to remove any remaining soap.  Raise the damp area off the floor so that it can dry fully. 

Unpacking Your Hide

We will send your hide to you folded and it is important for you to allow time for your hide to "relax" after it is unfolded and laid out on your floor.  Any creases will drop out when your hide is in place.  If you have a stubborn crease or fold, pop a few books on the affected, this will help your hide to settle again. 

Storing Your Hide

Your hide should be stores in a cool and dry place with a good degree of ventilation.  If you need to store your hide, it is important to roll or fold your hide with the hair facing inwards.  This helps to protect the hair and prevent unnecessary strain on the hair structure.  Just remember, that it will take some time to settle again when you place it on the floor, in the future.
